Before & after your visit

How to prepare

Everything you need to know before your tattoo or piercing, and how to heal it right afterward. Every body heals a little differently, so if your artist gives you different instructions, follow your artist.

Tattoos

Before your tattoo

The week before

  • Moisturize the area every day. Healthy, hydrated skin takes ink better.
  • Keep the area out of the sun. No sunburn, tanning beds or self-tanner.
  • Hold off on new skin treatments, peels or waxing on that spot.
  • Feeling sick? Text us and we'll move your appointment. Your body heals better when you're well.

The day before

  • Get a good night's sleep.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • No alcohol for at least 24 hours. It thins your blood and makes tattooing and healing harder.
  • Avoid aspirin and other blood thinners unless your doctor prescribed them. Never stop a prescribed medication without talking to your doctor.

The day of

  • Eat a real meal an hour or two before you come in.
  • Wear comfortable, dark clothing that gives easy access to the tattoo spot.
  • Arrive on time. Running late? Text us at 201-354-9402 as soon as you can. Late arrivals are up to your artist's discretion.
  • Don't use numbing cream unless your artist has approved it first.

Your design

  • You and your artist go over the idea by phone or in person before your appointment.
  • The final design is reviewed with you at the appointment. That's the time to ask for any changes.
  • Once tattooing starts, the design is considered approved.

Piercings

Before your piercing

Getting ready

  • Eat something and drink water before you come in.
  • No alcohol for at least 24 hours before.
  • Wear clothing that gives easy access to the area, like a loose top for navel piercings.
  • Tell your piercer about any metal allergies.

ID and age

  • Bring a valid government-issued photo ID.
  • Under 18? A parent or legal guardian must come with you and show their own valid photo ID.
  • Not sure which piercing or jewelry is right for you? Just ask. We'll walk you through it.

  • Minors can be pierced only with a parent or legal guardian present who shows valid photo ID.

Guests

  • You're welcome to bring one guest.

Payment

  • We accept cash and all major credit and debit cards.
  • A 3% processing fee is added to card payments.

Touch-ups

  • Text us to set up your touch-up.

Your health

  • Let your artist know before your appointment about any medical conditions, medications, allergies, or if you're pregnant or nursing.

Deposits & rescheduling

All deposits are non-refundable.

When you book, that time is set aside just for you, and your artist turns other clients away to hold it. If an appointment is cancelled or moved, your deposit covers part of what your artist loses when that spot can't be filled.

  • Rescheduling: text or call us at 201-354-9402 at least 10 days before your appointment and your deposit moves to the new date. Less notice than that, or a second reschedule, forfeits your deposit.
  • New dates: your new date has to fall within your artist's booking window.
  • Running late: text us as early as possible. Late arrivals are up to your artist's discretion.
  • No-shows: no-shows and cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice forfeit the deposit and won't be able to book with us again.
  • Design changes: let your artist know about any design changes at least 10 days before your appointment. A new idea brought in within 10 days may forfeit your deposit if it's not something your artist will do.
  • Switching artists: deposits can't be transferred to another artist.

Aftercare

Healing your tattoo

Aftercare can vary a little from artist to artist and depends on your tattoo and skin type. If you're ever unsure, follow your artist's instructions.

Second-skin bandage

  • Leave the bandage on for 6 days, or as long as your artist tells you.
  • If it starts to come off early, soak it with lukewarm water and gently peel off the rest.
  • Then wash the tattoo gently with unscented liquid soap and clean hands.

After the bandage comes off

  • Days 1–7: wash with unscented soap and water 3 times a day, pat dry with a clean paper towel, then apply a very thin layer of aftercare ointment.
  • Weeks 2–3: switch to a thin layer of unscented lotion 2–3 times a day.
  • Don't soak your tattoo (pools, ocean, lakes, baths) for at least one month.

What's normal

  • Itching and peeling after a few days. Don't scratch or pick. Let flakes fall off on their own.
  • Some swelling and redness for up to a week.
  • A little ink coming to the surface. Wash gently and reapply ointment.
  • Looking cloudy or dull while it heals. Most tattoos fully heal in about 4 weeks, but everyone is different.

Key points

  • Avoid heavy sweating around the tattoo for 2 weeks.
  • Less is more with ointment and lotion. Let it breathe.
  • Use sunscreen whenever the tattoo will be in the sun, even after it heals.
  • Wear clean, loose clothing, change your sheets often, and keep pets away from it.

Aftercare

Healing your piercing

Daily care

  • Spray or rinse with sterile saline twice a day.
  • Gently pat dry with a clean paper towel. Cloth towels can hold bacteria and snag jewelry.
  • Wash your hands before touching anywhere near the piercing.

Avoid

  • Twisting, turning or playing with the jewelry.
  • Alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, tea tree oil and ointments.
  • Pools, hot tubs, lakes and the ocean while it heals.
  • Sleeping on it or pressure from headphones, hats or tight clothes.

Jewelry

  • Keep your jewelry in until the piercing is fully healed, even if it looks fine.
  • Some piercings start with a longer bar to allow for swelling. Come back when the swelling goes down and we'll fit a shorter one.

Healing time

  • Everyone heals differently. Typical ranges: earlobes about 6–8 weeks, nose 4–6 months, cartilage and navel 6–12 months.
  • Unusual redness, heat, thick yellow or green discharge, or fever? Text us and see a doctor. Don't take the jewelry out on your own.
